SD80MAC

Hi from England [:)], Has any SD80MAC ever worked out to CA, would be interested to hear if one ever did, a picture would be nice as well

A guarded maybe. Conrail kept pretty tight reins on them. NS and CSXT keep them in captive service. But, that is not to say one couldn’t have escaped on a run thru train and wound up in Calif. There is no “always” or “never” when it comes to locomotive distribution.

The two demo SD80MACs did spend quite a bit of time in Colorado and then demonstrated on various roads, but I don’t know their itinerary. BNSF and UP were already purchasing ACs, so I doubt they’d have wanted to demo them.

We had them in Wisconsin for a winter, I can assure you they do not run long enough to make a trip to the west coast.

Dont know of any, but the genrally operated in Pennsylvania,Maryland and Virginia.

The 80MACs were a Conrail only locomotive, and rarely ventured off Conrail (or ex-Conrail now) territory. However UP has some 90MACs that are identical. They would be more likely to show up in CA.

I did hear that several years back, some worked on Wisconsin Central…Norfolk Southern owns 17 and CSX owns 13 of the ex-Conrail units. NS keeps theirs primarily in Pennsylvania, running between Altoona ad Johnstown on Coal and local activity, and also on the Monongehela Coal lines South of Pittsburgh. Once in awhile, some will make it out onto the Main and head to Enola. CSX’s roam the ir system a bit more, but it would be a rarity to see an 80MAC West of Pennsylvania nowadays…

From your other posts I am guessing that CA means California (as opposed to Canada). UP SD90MACs were regulars on grain trains and still show up fairly often. The same probably goes for coal trains. I just saw a former Conrail locomotive on Saturday but it was a 9-40CW (or 8-40CW).

Out of these 250 pictures only one is west of the Mississippi. Most of the Conrail shots are between Boston and Albany.

The SD90MAC might look similar, but they are quite different under the hood - the 90MAC has a 6000hp V16 ‘H’ series 4-stroke diesel engine, the 80MAC has a 5000hp V20 ‘710’ series 2-stroke engine.

UP also has some SD9043MACs which are 90MACs fitted with a 4300hp V16 ‘710’ series 2-stroke engine.

Are there actually any ‘true’ 6000 HP 90MACS out there…UP’s had 4300 HP prime movers installed at the onset, did any get converted to 6,000…

Canadian Pacific has 4 H engine SD90MAC 9300-9303 and Union Pacific has 62 of them, 8500-8561.

Thanks guys but I am aware of the differences between a SD80 and 90MAC’s and the derivatives and who has what. It would seem that the furthest west a SD80MAC has got is TX. I have been to Colton a couple of times over the last few years but i’ve never seen a UP SD90MAC there either.

I have some pics of to ex-conrail SD80MACs in Cresson, PA. They were bracketing a set of hopper cars. http://www.angelfire.com/ny5/exit68/NS_Pittsburg_Line.htm
