What brand and what scale SD9?
Pretty much anything can be converted to DC. Some are just easier than others.

Schmux,

What make and type of SD9? All can be converted, from an old Athearn BB to a new RTR. Also, how much do you waht to put into the loco? Do you want sound? Mars light? Ditch lights? The age and type, along with what you want to put in it, will determine how much effort is needed to convert it to DCC.
[:I] Thanks rrinker, it is a proto 2000 ho sd9.
OK, is it a newer one, with all the wires going to a small ‘board’ that plugs into a somewhat larger board with diodes on it, or is there just one large board that all the wires connect to, with a large green (or maybe blue) resistor on it?
I have one of the older ones. I just removed the board and wired the decoder to the proper leads. I replaced the light bulbs with Miniatronics Yelo-Glo LEDs, each with a 1K resistor. Pretty straightforward. Red decoder wire to the two black wires coming off the right side of the trucks, black decoder wire to the two black wires coming off the left side of each truck, orange to the red motor wire, gray to the black motor wire. Front LED and resistor hook to the white and blue wires, rear LED and resistor hook to the yellow and blue wires.

I put a Loksound hard wired with the small dual speakers in one of mine. LEDs for headlites and a TCS T1 with LEDs hard wired in the other. I just wish the horn was louder.
Pete
Got enclosures on those speakers? It makes a HUGE difference. The front of the speaker must be sealed from the rear of the speaker. ANd make sure both speakers are in phase and not cancling one another out.

[8)] Thanks rrinker, I have the one board with the blue resistor. I can’t wait to tackle this project.
I thought I took pictures of mine, and I did. If you hit my web site and go through the DCC section you will se a link to (actually it was an SD7, not SD9 - but same design) where I have a couple pictures of the install on a webshots gallery.

Hi R
Yes they are baffled. The ones that come with the speakers. The other sounds are great. But the Bell is louder than the horn. Thats all I have to say about Loksound.
Pete
You can turn down the bell without changing the volume of the whistle or other sounds. My PCM T1 is plenty loud, I had to turn the whole thing down a level. There aren’t as many individual adjustments as say a QSI, but there is independent control over the motor/chuff, whistle, bell, and other sounds.
