Sealing wood structures

What is a good way to seal the wood on structure kits before painting or chaulking? I’ve used polyurethane stain in the past but I’ve still had to weight down the pieces between wax paper to prevent warping.[?]

I’ve used spray bombs of regular automotive primer with good results. 3 or 4 real light coats usually will seal it up without obliterating the details.

I use acrylic artist’s paints and get the color at the same time. This might now work for a newly painted surface look as well as a stained or weathered look.

What ever you use, do all sides equally.

I coat it with shellac. When it’s dry, I paint it.

Anything that penetrates and drives the poisture out.

Spray Clear Shellac works great. The secret is to cover both sides with whatever you use. This will cut down of the curling.

I hate it when one of my structures gets all poist! [:D]

I have always used one part white glue with 5 to 10 parts water [depends on how hard the wood is] and some dishsoap [about 3 or 4 drops per pint].
This also helps later for when glueing it together.
I ussually seal it after I stain but before I paint the wood.
I find that it interferes with stains making them look blotchy. However if I am going to paint it a solid colour then it does not matter.
