Searching for UP passenger car paint scheme...

I haven’t had any success so far in finding picture(s) of the two tone gray Pullman cars that UP used during the 1946-50 period on trains like the Portland Rose and other passenger trains.I would like to duplicate this train as a long term project but all the info I’ve been able to find so far are about the latter version with yellow E8’s and similarly coloured cars.I’ve been informed that UPHS has published a very nice article on this train in the past and I’ll be ordering a back issue of their mag shortly but I fear it may not contain the specific info I’m looking for.Ca someone help me in guiding my search?I don’t know where to look.Thanks.

Hello “Jacktal,”

Go back to the UPHS Web site (www.uphs.org) and order a copy of Vol. 4, No. 1 of The Streamliner. It includes a long article by Lou Schmitz on the two-tone gray paint scheme, including photos of passenger cars and painting and lettering diagrams for several different types of cars, including heavyweight and lightweight Pullman sleepers.

Good luck with your train,

Andy

Some time ago I discovered that the Stuhr Museum in Grand Island, Nebraska had a UP 2-tone gray 10-1-2 sleeper (10 regular sections, 1 drawing room and 2 compartments), named Lake Crystal. They very kindly took some pictures of the interior and sent them to me. In the main area the walls are pale green and the seats are blue. The floor is a brown and light brown pattern that looks like flowers in tiles about 10" square. In compartments B and C (the suites) the outside walls are pale green and the partitions tan. The upholstery is a reddish brown. The bathrooms are a pale green with a tan ceiling.

I don’t know if this site will help: http://www.trainweb.org/passengercars/ , but give it a shot.

Walthers has recently had a really strong sale (most cars for $19.98; list was $40-49) on their heavyweight Pullmans and other passenger cars. They are available in many road names, including 2-tone gray UP - I know, because I bought a bunch of 2-tone gray SP, but the SP baggage car was all gone and I bought the UP version instead, all it will need is a little re-lettering… I presume (hope) the paint scheme is pretty accurate - anyone?
