It looks like TTX has acquired some second hand Gunderson boxcars. On my way home I saw a brown TBOX (663119 if I remember correctly). The train also had an 86’ NKCR boxcar. I wish it was still light out when I saw it.
Any way you can check on that, Eric? That number doesn’t show up in UMLER.
No, I can’t check. It was dark and I was only able to read the numbers when the cars pass through the crossing (I was also a few vehicles back).
I saw TBOX 889430 yesterday. It looks like the series is TBOX 889269-889555. I have also seen TOBX [sic] boxcars in the 880000s. I wonder which car series I saw in November.
I, too, have seen both TBOX and TOBX cars in that 880000 area. The TOBX is not a mistake; it’s a reporting mark assigned to TTX Company. The definition hasn’t been posted in Equipment Registers yet, so I don’t know why some cars (889000-889268) are lettered TOBX and the others (889269+) are TBOX. The TOBX cars have Norfolk Southern ancestry (via HS and LRS), and I think the red TBOX cars also came from LRS.
LRS is the Laurinburg & Southern Railroad, heretofore a fairly quiet shortline, which recently has gotten a lot of cars lettered for it. I suspect that it’s owned by one of the big leasing companies, and that their cars behave a lot like the NOKL, NKCR, AOK, and other similar lines.
These TBOX cars have patch jobs that appear to be consistent with covering up the UP logo. Perhaps they are former UP 354000 series.

Eric, I’m sure you’re right about that, and I seem to remember something along those lines. But for some reason, I don’t have that info in my logs. The UP cars were relettered AOK, same numbers, so it would be the same type of deal if they went to TTX.
Presumably TOFX is a TTX reporting marks, which is what http://www.nakina.net/other/report/reportttx.html lists it as. A couple of days ago I saw a few shiny, brown TOFX boxcars that had not been patched. I wonder why TTX is not painting them yellow or putting its logo on them.
Speaking of report marks, what are some good sites? All of my bookmarked sites are no longer there.
I use that Nakina site pretty much exclusively, because of its historical aspect. I’ve noticed that it doesn’t get updated very often, though.
I wish I knew what was going on with those new TTX reporting marks!
