The complaint was in regard to crews being blinded by the reflection of light off falling or blowing snow. That’s why BNSF switched to low headlights. In some other cases, it is common practice to have hoods (shades) underneath the high mount headlights. CSX has been ordering lower headlights, as has UP, on its SD70MAC/2s and ES44ACs and DCs. NS units have the shades under the headlights. Informally, lots of crews will run with their headlights dimmed to compensate for the glare off snow regardless of the headlight placement. Then, there are guys who like the Blues Brothers, will wear sungalsses at night.
