Still on a quest for the right look. Anyone here use the “Blocky Rock” from Cripplebush?
It’s a final contender but it’s hard to tell the scale of the blocks without a piece of rolling stock or a ruler in the online catalog pics.
I’m interested in Blocky Rock #1 the …blocky one.
Thanks,
Jim
why not contact Cripplebush and ask dimensions. Very nice product.
Used their product on one section of layout. Used Hunterline stains to tint.
They have a great website with dimensions, prices and pictures.
Yes, the overall dimensions are listed but some of the sample pics are not “blow-upable” on computer. (blocky rock being one of them). Gardiner will take another pic close up and send me something soon so that’ll answer that.
Aside from getting the dimensions (and even photos) form a manufacturer being certainly helpful, there’s nothing like seeing them finished and installed on people’s layouts via pics.
I found the recent generous postings by members of the Santa Fe Canyon castings on their layouts to be extremely helpful in making a decision. Same goes for plaster or Geo. Foam Bragdon rocks.
The gallery pic looks like it MIGHT be Blocky Rock but not sure.
Seeing as Gardiner Cross (the owner/inventor of rubber rocks has only one dealer currently I suggested that he consider making up a sample “swatches” kit to sell and mail out which it seems (to me anyway) likely to spur on decision making and purchases. Don’t know if that’s practical or doable for him but seemed like a good idea… There is currently only one pic in his “on the layout” gallery so that would be nice to see expanded. Maybe users here and on other forums might consider asking him if he’d like something to put up on his site?
Anyway IF I go with the rubber rocks, I’m down to either Santa Fe Canyon (to resemble the Olympic Penninsula’s rocks along the coast in WA State or the blocky rock if it looks right.
Thanks everyone once again for all the help and pics and advice regarding this product.
I promise you will not be disappointed in this product. When I unboxed mine I immediately knew it was money well spent. Nothing against hydrocal and castings, but the time saved was spent doing something else that I enjoy doing.
Hi G.S.
Thanks. I’m leaning in this direction fairly strongly. I sure wouldn’t mind any painting and blending in tips. Your pic on your blog/site look great! Did you just follow Cripplebush’s painting instructions on his site or did you vary that method any? I wondered also about using gesso instead of latex paint for the lst overall coat (plaster cloth hardshell and the the “rocks”. Bragdon prefers it for his castings but it’s unclear if he means only/mostly for his Geo. Foam system or plaster also. Gesso is the coating that oil painters use to prepare their canvases to except paint pigment better.
Do you have any further or newer pics of yours that aren’t yet on your blog/site?
I’m concerned about hiding edges of each piece but guess that’ll become apparent once i have the material in hand. I’ll likely, at least, order one piece to see if it looks good on my layout and then consider more.
