Seeking Industrial Switching Layout w/ Car Ferry

I’m just now getting back into model railroading after about 20yr hiatus. I’ve totally been working too hard and need to pick up a hobby again.

I’m thinking of starting with a small industrial switching layout.

In doing my research, I was reminded of an article in MR in the late '70s or early '80s that had captured my imagination. I think it was just a small switching layout and was a modern-era industrial waterfront / dock / wharf scene with a car ferry. The ferry was double track and its benchwork were on casters I believe, and could be rolled away from the layout and back for staging. I’m guessing HO.

I’ve been reading this forum and found quite a bit of good information on docks and ferries to model, but I was wondering if I could find this specific layout or article. Honestly, I think it is just bugging more than the true value of the information :).

Does anyone know which layout or MR issue I am thinking of?

thanks,
rich

Well, you could always browse the magazine index and see you if spot it, leafing through the indexes of old issues: http://trc.trains.com/Train%20Magazine%20Index.aspx?view=ViewMagazine&magazineId=1

Or search the index for MR between e.g. 1970 and 1990 for various possible keywords - say “waterfront”:

http://trc.trains.com/Train%20Magazine%20Index.aspx?view=SearchResults&q=waterfront&startYear=1970&endYear=1990&magazineId=1&advanced=true

Or “harbor”

http://trc.trains.com/Train%20Magazine%20Index.aspx?view=SearchResults&q=harbor&startYear=1970&endYear=1990&magazineId=1&advanced=true

Or whatever other keywords you can think about.

Thanks Stein.

I actually had used the index search some, but hadn’t found the advanced options. That did it.

“Great Lakes car ferry”

That’s the cover photo I remember!

Thanks so much!

If you can find a copy of “Model Railroad Planning 2002” , there is an article by Bernie Kempinski about modeling the C&O’s Brooke Ave. Yard in Norfolk, Virginia. The yard’s only connection with other rails was with a car float. Bernie gives plans for both HO and N scale layouts of this yard.
