Some railroads order “self-start” locomotives. What would be the purpose of that?
To allow them to “self shutdown” and save fuel.
and to keep the engine from freezing
Because they can’t put anti-freeze into diesel engine radiators, and the engines must be kept warm enough to prevent freezing. Once the engine has been warmed up, it can be shut down to conserve fuel.
