I was just wondering if you can accept a money order as payment when selling trains on ebay?? I see lots of people selling trains on ebay that stated that the accept or prefer money orders or personal checks. I thought this was not allowed and people still get away with it. Is it still allowed?? Thanks.
I had heard that eBay was phasing any payment other than PayPal out. Not sure what the cut off date is. The claim is that it protects both the buyer and the seller, but I have heard a number of stories where folks on both sides have come up empty.

The “Pay Pal ONLY” policy took effect “officially” January 15, 2009.
Still some money orders being accepted while the word gets around, I guess.
Some buyers refuse to use Pay Pal, and it leaves the seller in an awkward situation, to say the least.
I had called “E-Bay” and asked them about one of those “No-Paypal” listings. They told me that, since the Seller stated that the item could be “picked up”, he could deny a “Paypal” payment. He could then, contact the Buyer, and they could make other arrangements for delivery and therefore he could request a money order if they agreed. (I guess, as the old saying goes, “There are ways”)
The last two things last week I got off ebay I paid for with a moneyorder. I will ask ahead of time if they accept a money order and if they say yes that is what I use.

I read that a buyer can ask to use a money order. The seller cannot ask for m.o.'s as payment tho.
I don’t buy much on E Bay but I have a 100% positive feedback rating. I don’t want to be bothered with setting up a Pay Pal account for what little I do. I have always used money orders with no problem. I have not bought anything since E Bay started this policy. E Bay, are you listening?
Paypal just saved me some grief … seller = nychudson700e insisted on money order at first … then I completely refused and he accepted paypal . Well he seemed to want to keep my money and never ship my engine ! It went for weeks … he came up with excuses after excuses … would’nt answer my emails … found out his phone number and called him twice … would’nt answer the phone messages … finally I had to file a claim with paypal … they got my money right back as they had to a few times before on rip off artists on ebay . All I can say is I will NOT buy on ebay without using paypal . BEWARE OF THAT GUY ==== >>>>>> nychudson700e <<<<<<< [:(!]
I have to agree with “Ole Timer” on this. What is the problem with being insured for your payment! If there was an extra charge I could understand, but when the price comes up, that is the price paid out by the buyer. I also have had to deal with non-shipment of articles and Pay-Pal came through right away with a complete refund a couple of times. I also have a 100% rating and I will only look at items that are listed with Pay-Pal. A couple of clicks of the mouse and the item is paid for and on its way.
So what exactly is the problem? A money order costs you money, in addition to the cost of the item, why would you get something that costs you more money to pay for a “BARGAIN”!
It seems simple enough to me, up here across the border it costs us enough in extras so a bargain has to be a bargain and anything to expedite this process and give us a value for our dollar is surely welcomed.
Sure some will say that the item costs more because of Pay-Pal charges for the seller, the idea of E-Bay is so that we can look for bargains and rareties, a dollar or so extra for the bargain or for that rare Timken Car is not out of line to pay that little extra when your $200.00 Timken car is never shipped and your money order that cost you $212.00 is cashed at an independent bank with a numbered account.
Pay-Pal has helped me get my refund quickly and easily on non shipments three times now and lets me maintain a very high buyer rating.
I would like to add a word of caution about accepting Money Orders, treat the money order like a check & make sure it clears the bank!! I was involved in a potential Money Order scam as the one who got stung, what I am saying is that there are Fake Money Orders out there so be careful.
The other word of caution on a money order is take it to where it was issued to cash it, even Postal Money Orders have been forged by scam artists!!

Have you contacted e-bay to ask them?
Re using pay pal for payment on ebay: I was a member of ebay for many years, both buying and selling. When I sold something I always accepted checks or money orders without having any problem at all. Now that paypal is required I have cancelled my accounts with both ebay and paypal. I feel that paying a listing fee, a fee when the item sells and a fee to paypal is just too much. BTW, do you realize that paypal is a wholly owned subsidiary of ebay? Seems that ebay wasn’t making enough in the present economy…
As others have stated, I would never pay with a check or money order because those can be cashed without the item being shipped.
Accepting them as payment is another story; you can always wait to ship the item you are selling until the check/money order has cleared and you have the cash.
There are too many ways to get stung these days and PayPal helps prevent that. Items ship much sooner because the seller knows the money is there. You have recourse through PayPal if an item isn’t shipped, or isn’t as advertised. Every now and then you get coupons through PayPal for a discount. Right now I have one for $2 off, not much but better than paying for a money order, stamp, and envelope and waiting for the seller to clear the money order before shipping.
When I have been buying on eBay, even before the new policy, I would not bid on an item if the seller did not accept paypal. In hundreds of transactions before, I had been burned twice by sending MOs and never getting anything sent.
As a buyer I have enjoyed the convenience of paypal - no more Saturday trips to the post office for money orders. I have also received refunds via paypal. Overall I have had good experience.
