Senator asks FRA to investigate Long Island freight train debris
Scrap metal loaded water-level-full is a nearly certain prevention. Scrupulous inspection for loose dunnage also works.
Does the Senator want more 18-wheelers on the LIE and other paths when the frt. doesn’t go NY&A?
Why is it that this senator is always calling for something? The NIMBY’s of this world complain at anything. The tracks were there long before they were.
How about we ask the senator to work on passing a budget and get on with the real business of the Senate.
This is New York City, for those of you who have never been to Long Island. The solution is quite simple. Do to the trains the same thing they have done to the trucks. Eliminate them during certain hours of the day. Or go one better and just eliminate all the trains. It is only a matter of time until all the trucks are gone. Fair is fair.
The real problem is the NIMBY squads are running out of things to complain about. Eventually all the commuter tracks will be lifted and the land converted to bicycle trails. I-495 will be converted to a green space. Then the NIMBY squads will complain about the deer and bicyclists. Meanwhile, Chucky will have something to do besides destroying the economy.
Maybe a good thing, but “Chuck-the-Schmuck” Schumer is debris from Long Island.
Charles “Chuck-the-Schmuck” Schumer won’t miss any photo op. Aktchu’lly, he does some good, to wit: trying to get the DHS/ICE to streamline border crossings on the “Adirondack” (deleting a 2-hour dwell) and approving the SNC extension to Tahawus, NY.
If this is happening as stated the cars are not properly loaded. AAR regulations already cover this and better inspection before pulling the loads is the answer. I cannot imagine why this had to go to the US Senate unless they didn’t call the railroad.
I agree that there are more important things our senator could
and should be doing, rather than catering to the NIMBY’s. Also
the NIMBY’s could and should find something else to do with
their time, like, finding a good, holsome hobby; maybe, such
as, railfanning?! HA! We have too many NIMBY minded
people such as these. That’s part of why our country is in the
shape it’s in. I think another term to describe them would be
the entitlement crowd.
Is there any documented case of debris hitting a car at a crossing? If it happened to me I would call the cops immediately.
It is a shame that for only two complaints to Senator Schumer he can bring the wrath of the MTA on the NY and Atlantic who is just about surviving. A previous comment stated, what you do to the RRs you should do to the truckers. If you have ever driven on the Long Island Expressway you take you life in you hands because of all the wreckless truckers who go basically unregulated. All the debris, waste from the power plants in Hempstead, all the freight, etc goes on the Expressway.
All open trucks should be covered and I mean completely covered. Many trucks have beat up covers that allow stone debris , etc on the highway. I have already replaced one windshield on my car and I will need to replace another on because of all the chips, gravel, sand rocks falling from the trucks.
The people that live in Mineola are classic NIMBYS. That railroad has been there for over 150 years. It is one of the busiest rail lineas in the country. What do you expect when you by a house or a condo that is adjacent to a busy rail thoroughfare, Duh!
But here comes Shumer, boy is he going to regulate, help, and be the champion of the so called underdog even if it is anti commerce, anti business, anti transportation etc. I am just disgusted.
I want to leave NY but my wife and the grandchildren keep me here. The population is declining in NY. Over 2 million people have left in the last 10 years. This is the most over regulated over taxed state in the Union. NY has just lost 3 congressional seats but the electorate keep putting in office the same people with the same policies. Do you think the electorate will get the message? I don’t think so.
If you are going to do a job like loading a gondola with scrap metal do it right!!! Hopefully american industry has gotten past sloppy procedures that got us in competitive trouble with the rest of the world, example auto build quality.

MANY RAILROAD CUSTOMERS AFTER HAVING UNLOADED THEIT INCOMING SHIPMENTS = LOAD THE EMPTY CAR WITH THEIR " GARBAGE " A VERY CHEAP WAY OF GETTING RID OF IT = NOT KNOWING THE PROBLEMS THAT ARISE FROM THIS PRACTICE.
I KNOW I WAS A TRANSPORTATION OFFICER WITYH CNR AND HAD TO DEAL WITH MORE THAN ONE OF THESE TYPES.
REFUSE TO PICK UP THE CAR UNLESS CLEANED AND FINE THEM $100.00 A DAY - COULD MAYBE SOLVE THE PROBLEM - WHY NOT MAKE THE FINE $500.00 A DAY…
THIS POLITICAL FIGURE HAS A GOOD POINT - GOOD LUCK
HOW MANY FLATBED TRUCKS DO YOU MEET OMN THE HIGHWAY WITH UNSECURED DEBRIS ON THEIR FLATBED TRAILER == NOT MANY == THANK GOD !
TRAINS CREWS ONLY NEED TO REFUSE TO PICK UP A SO CALLED " EMPTY CSAR ’ TO GET THIS BALL ROLLING
Things shouldn’t be flying out of a train as it rolls along the tracks.
The same neighborhood complained about items “flying off of passing commuter trains” and landing in their back yards. The accompanying picture in the local paper showed a tie plate. Not the sort of thing that flies off of passenger trains. Or any train. The folks that live along the r.o.w. just want the railroad to go away. They should have thought of that before they moved in. This is just another orchestrated beef against the third track that is needed on the main line by fuzzy thinking narcissists who got in Schumer’s ear. sigh
Maybe the senate can’t pass a budget because the senators are too busy working on important country-wide issues like this. [roll-eyes]
No mention of an investigation of those complaints to see if they are founded (which I doubt). NY&A and LIRR should check it out by interviewing the complaints and documenting the so-called debris. Then if it’s unfounded, take the report to Schummer and the media. My guess is that most of the debris is litter and such that is just part of the urban landscape.
Just another Democrat wasting everyone’s time and money looking to buy votes.
Sorry Jeff although they intertwine, NYC and Long Island are not the same. As got things flying off passenger trains… Yes it does happen, such as a third rail contact shoe about the size of an iPad only thicker and weighing about 50 pounds, coming undone on an electric trainset (which is like 85% of the LIRR’s fleet) and flying off randomly at 80 mph. It’s rare and not supposed to happen, but all mechanical things fail sometime or another. If you buy property abutting the right of way which has been there first for about 200 years learn to expect the unexpected and pray you’re not sitting in the path of the projectile should this occur. That is all, have a nice day!
