When a model manufacturer, such as Atlas, says that ‘there are many separately installed (or applied) items such as windshield wipers, handrails etc’, do they always mean that you, the buyer, have to install them or they have already done it? I can’t remember which of my 5 engines it was but I believe the box said this and when I opened it everything was already in place.
Not sure, some of the others here will know more about this than I. What I think it means is that the seperately applied items are not molded into the main part but are installed at the factory. Mike
Generally, separately applied detail means that rather then being molded on the shell, descrete detail pieces are applied at the factory.

Thanks Mike and Nick for the answers!
Life-Like is also famous for including additional details as customer-applied details. Besides the standard separately applied details which come already attached out of the box, there is a little packet of extra which you have to add yourself, usually unit-specific items where you will need to find a picture of the actual loco to see which parts, if any, you need to install. An example, my GP-7’s come out of the box with no MU stands. In the package are 3 types you can install yourself, depending on what the actual loco had. Luckily there are hundreds of pictured of Reading GP-7’s so I was able to determine the proper ones. They also include all-weather windows and sunshdaes, none of which I have found evidenced to being installed on Reading units, so they stay in the parts bag
