I don’t think they have a clue as to the effect yet. It is going to devastate transportation as the effects begin to pile up. Gov agencies are gutting maintenance, support, and planning to make the political statement for which ever political party they are supported by and you and I will be the pawns. I’m watching it implode from the inside and have seen what happens when the infrastructure is ignored. There needs to be corrective action, but the price that this will cost is delayed, but not for long. If you can get yourself some where on your own with out the infrastructure, you will be lucky. Amtrak (aviation,… transportation in general) might not be hit today, but wait a month or two and these headlines will begin to tell the real story.

Mark Hulsey, are you Jeffery Guse with a new pseudonym? For your information, Amtrak is a bargain compared to the huge subsidy that the airlines enjoy. Compare 15 billion dollars as opposed to the measly less that one billion Amtrak receives.
Amen to that, Lawrence! Kudos to “Amtrak Joe”, He’s actually saving taxpayers money by taking the train. Still, there are a lot of troglodytes that believe it’s cheaper to fly Amtrak riders.
The Secret Service is right about the security issues. If Joe wants to take the train the best option would be to reserve any of a number of office cars available and designate it “Amtrak Two” Armored, of course, with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” emblazoned on the letter board and “Amtrak” sub-lettering on each end like a Pullman car. A communications suite for the SS Detail, a cook/attendant and ample, but understated furnishings and that should have it knocked.

What Jeff Guse does NOT realize is the fact being that railroads paid dearly to subsidize the construction of the Interstate Highway system through property taxes. Did the government return this investment in taxes to the railroad? Of course not, if they would have, they would have provided police and security for the rail lines, which in most cases, the railroads, including Amtrak, have their own police.
Jeff, FUEL TAXES WILL NOT cover the costs for maintaining the highway infrastructure and they never will because all of that fuel tax money is being blown away on NEW road construction only, which ought to be zeroed out immediately! Cutting out new highway construction and redirecting that money to road repairs, safety improvements, and bridge maintenance of the existing infrastructure is decades overdue. The highways also get monies from sales taxes(outside of fuel), property taxes, bonds, income taxes, and traffic fines(outside of truck size and weigh violations).
Jeff’s statements on the financing of transportation are nothing more than a bunch of false facts and phony figures released from the libertarian lunatics at the Reason Foundation and CATO Institute. had the Libertarian Party existed before 1957, I doubt we would have an Interstate Highway System, since it is the party’s interests to protect wealth, which at that time, the railroads were.

And yet this administration will let our Armed Services take a hit… I love trains and riding them, but AMTRAK should be furloughed right after the all the politicians in Washington including His Excellency!
Of course the idiots of the country believe any cuts to spending will hurt. Trouble is, the so-called cuts are for future spending, which means there are no spending cuts. It’s like a store that has a 50% off sale which never seems to end. The store management doubles their prices plus 10%. Then the store has that 50% off sale. You think you are saving money. But in reality, you are still paying more than before.
Amtrak isn’t based on future spending. It is based on taking money from the Highway Trust (Slush) Fund for its own waste, fraud, and abuse. The Highway Trust (Slush) Fund gets its money from highway users, which explains why fuel taxes are so high and yet, the roads are falling apart. All that money is being diverted to Amtrak and other special non-highway interests.
I hope that Amtrak let the Vice President keep his, “Guest Reward Points”. If it did, then Biden could ride for free saving the taxpayers money!
