“Let’s get sex off of the forum and get it back in the motel room where it belongs!”
I suppose it’s the software default to use the standard sex icons instead of somethign a little less obvious. Most forum software has the option on your profile to specify your gender, or leave it off. This one is no exception. In fact by default it was set to off, anyone’s who displays (including mine) is because the person edited their profile and selected one.

John your title is a bit misleading. I thought you were referring to ads for things like Viagra showing up on the site. They seem to be popping up in all the magazines I subscribe to. Frankly I get truck magazines to read about trucks, if I want Viagra I’ll read Penthouse or Cosmo. You’re not referring to sex but gender, slightly different.
That said, I agree that it’s not really relevant to these fourms but if folks want to be clear about it then that’s their choice though they could have been putting it in their signatures all along.
The gender icon is included if you indicated gender in your profile.
It must have been important if the user chose to indicate sex in their profile.
