Sheet metal siding found by accident.

Hello all,

As a model railroader regardless of scale…you have to admit , we are a cheap bunch. Not enless you have money growing on trees ,just for this hobby.

A friend of mine ,gave me a call couple of weeks a go and asked if I’d help him move a projection screen TV. Seeing it was getting throw out, I wondered if there was any parts ,I could use.
Low and behold…sure there was, it seems the screen protecter looks like HO scale sheet metal siding.
I have about 10 sqaure feet of usable ,HO scale sheet metal. When ever I get a chance to build my BOF building, I don’t have to fork out big bucks for evergreen sheet metal siding.

Moral of the story…before you throw out something ,take a close look at it to see if you can use it for your hobby.

When my wife and I take walks in our community, I stop and pick up any odd looking piece of metal, bolt, nut, washer or what-not. She always says, “What do you want that for… Oh I know the railroad!” There are lots of intereting odds and ends out there that make good looking “roof top” or other items. I am saving the blade cover or certain throw away razors for the brackets that hold up piping in oil refineries and chemical plants.

I find myself looking at absolutely everything in terms of whether or not it could be used for something in HO scale. I don’t have a layout yet, but I have a great collection of Pringle’s potato chip tubes for silos for cement or coal! The sheet metal angle sounds great. I was wondering about using heavy duty aluminum foil and rolling a jar lid edge on it to make it look corrugated. A lot of plastic jars have fine serrations on the edge to provide a grip when opening. They look like the ribs in HO scale sheet metal.

Cheers.

My friends can’t afford big screen projection televisions, let alone throw them out! hehe
