shelf layout in HO

I’ve gone through many ideas on how I want to build my layout.I,m thinking now of a shelf layout and would like to know the maximum depth I can do .Also is it practical to use the modular method in conjunction with the shelf type.

Thanks

i would definitely do modules and dependent on height would go 24-30" in width - same as the rule for a round the walls. I suspect that space is a problem for now and by doing modules you could easily incorporate them into something bigger some day if you so desire.

If you end up higher than 48", I would limit your depth to 24" max. Also, modular is definitely a good way to go. Use a 1x4 frame with 2" pink or blue foam to keep things lightweight.

The rule I tend to use is this: To find out how deep you should make your model railroad, suspend a small child over a collection of priceless Faberge eggs and ancient Ming Dynasty china. The distance at which you can comfortably hold the child over the Faberge eggs and china is the depth you should make your layout.

This mental exercise is intended to simulate the emotional strain you will feel when attempting to carefully paint scenery, install wiring or re-rail a derailed car without putting a hand through your finely detailed scenery, inadvertently squashing your prize-winning scratchbuilt structure, or sending your prized brass locomotive tumbling to the floor through the gaps in your benchwork.

Modular construction and shelf layouts go hand in hand. I like a 48" height and 30" depth.

Thankyou.That is what I’m doing then.Shelf and modular.I’ll go the 30" depth.
