How do you take the shell off? the directions didnt help much. i want to add a decoder.
Remove couplers, lift off shell.

thats what i thought. i tried that and it is still being held on my something. i could not find any other screws.
Are we talking HO here? The Atlas site has a part explosion for the B40-8W/B32-8WH. Unfortunately it is only the second page which shows the chassis assembly. However, they do have both pages of the Dash 8-40B engine. It appears to me that both of the chassis assemblies are the same. So if we want to take a giant leap of faith and assume (always a dangerous thing) that both of the shell assemblies would attach to the chassis in the same manner, the 8-40B cab and nose assembly has three rectangular slotted projections on each side that would engage rectangular tabs on the frame.
If your 8-32B is the same, then you’ll have to disengage these tabs. Different folks will have their opinions on how to do this. One method would be to turn the unit over and move the tabs over with a small jewelers flat blade screwdriver. Use some flat toothpicks to insert between the chassis and the frame to keep the tabs disengaged as you move from one to the next. If you have 6 hands and are dexterous, you won’t need the toothpicks.
I don’t have one of these engines myself, so the above information is offered without any warranty. Just do me a favor and let us know if the information is correct in case anyone else asks.

Any Tabs? The exploded parts will show any extra screws or tabs…

I believe that David B. is correct regarding tabs. It appears that the 8-32BHW chassis is the same as the 8-40B. The 8-40B shell assembly shows that there are three tabs on each side. If you go to the Atlas site and look up the engine part drawings, you’ll see what they look like.
those tabs were a real pain! i got the job done though. installed the atlas master decoder. i think im going to need to replace the headlights. they are not very bright.
