Before you chew on me, I purchased a Kato diesel engine on e-bay. Would like to remove the shell to see if it is plug and play. If so I am told it will save me at least 50.00 in labor, etc. The unit has hand rails, is 4 axel, flat in front and back, 3 windows in cab. 4 1/2" long front coupler to rear coupler. Made in Japan. Maybe a switcher? Thanks.
I have Kato C44-9Ws that should be the same. Mine come apart right above the walkway, so try loosening the hand rails from the cab and then pulling up on the shell at the rear of the engine to separate it from the frame. Gently wiggling it from side to side as you pull up may help it separate. Once the rear is up slightly you can then work the front off.
Thank you for your reply. This may be an older engine. More along the lines of the 50’s and 60’s. No large fans on top. Radiator grills on front side and top. The hand rails seem to be attached to the walk way. In fact I can see that they are.
It sounds like a Kato NW2. If so, they have detailed instructions on how to get the shell off. Look under their “bulletins and tech notes.”
Louie;
Please identify the specific model that you have. Start with the KatoUSA website:
But it may be a model that Kato made for Atlas, in which case, check Atlas’ website:
Like the poster above, I would guess that it is a NW2, and follow the instructions provided.
The Kato NW2 model is difficult to pry apart, their most difficult. They have a special instruction for doing so for the NW2 on the Kato website, I recall.
