Shift in Railroading preference?

I am aware that HO scale is currently the preferred scale by many, however, does anyone foresee any shift towards a smaller scale being the preferred scale in the future? I realize this is future predicting and it is not an easy task, however, I am just wondering if circumstances due to cost, availability, etc. might come into play.
