shim thickness for caboose industries ground throw

Hello everyone! I am in the process of replacing all of the altlas remote switches with Caboose Industries 202S ground throws on my layout. It looks like they need to be shimmed. What thickness do u recommend? I am not using any roadbed, track is tacked down to plywood base. Thanks!

If the track is nailed directly onto the plywood surface of your layout, then you shouldn’t need a shim under the ground throw. Just nail the ground throw directly to the plywood. That’s exactly what I have done in my coach yard where the track is nailed directly onto the plywood surface. Do yourself a favor and use a pin vice to drill pilot holes so that it will be a lot easier to install the ground throws where you want them without bending any nails.

Thanks! Already drilled them out with the recommended #54 bit.

For a more prototypical look you can install some headblock ties and mount your ground throws to them.

Joe

don’t the ground throws sit on top of some ties?

Rich,

The only thing I would add to richotrain’s response is that I find the pins on the Caboose Industries ground throws are a bit long, protruding below the turnout throw bar. I nip just a bit from them so they won’t rub on the surface underneath (plywood, in your case).

Good luck!
