Shipyard railroad receives grant for track upgrades
The shipyard has been closed for many years, so the headline is not fully accurate.
The huge facility is still called the “Quincy shipyard” although no ships have been built or repaired there in many years. It was formerly a General Dynamics yard and before that it was run by Bethlehem Steel. It ran “24/7” during WW2. The grant is to straighten out a huge “S”-curve in the line inside the yard. The freight junction is at East Braintree and the interchange is at Braintree yard. I have a vague memory from the 1940s of seeing steam switchers on this line.
For a very short, short line which runs with 2 old GE “U-Boats” and sometimes an older (EMD?) unit, it was fun to watch from my office overlooking the Shipyard, as many locals still call it, back before my recent retirement. Lots of switching and noise and plenty of smoke to be had. At least one train back & forth to Braintree through suburban neighborhoods every weekday.
