Hey everyone!
Being in the Armed Forces I have a lot of shoe polish kickin’ around. I tryed a bit on one of my N scale box cars to weather it and the result seemed to be quite good. Has anyone ever tried this before and if so, is it a good practice or not???
Ian
Shoe polish, basically used like artist oils, will give you weathering effects, and depending on your abilities may be quite good. There are only two problem I can see. First, shoe polish is oil based, and the chemicals in the show polish may attack either the paint, or plastic, or both over time. Secondly, being oil based, it won’t “dry”, so every time you handle the car, you will leave finger prints, or smudge the surface. To counter this, you might try spraying with “dullcoat” to seal the effect. Let us know how it works. I’m always willing to learn new things. Robert
another thing you might try is the power make-up ladies use on their cheek-bones and under these eye’s,and rub it in very good
Well, looks as though the shoe polish I first tried a month ago still looks pretty good. It rubbed off a bit on the smooth areas but held quite well in cracks and corners. So far so good!!!
Cheers!!!

I have also found that liquid shoe polish and heel and sole dressing works pretty well for weathering rolling stock. I have a boxcar that I weathered about fifteen years ago with Kiwi liquid black and it still looks great. What branch of the service are you in?
