Hey! I’m new to this posting stuff, but I was at the Galt derailment last week and got some decent pics of the old bridge, and some of the shoo fly while I was working there. Here is the address of the album…let me know if you are unable to view them! Thanks!
Great pix’s.
Thats just very sad to see a piece of history being cut up no thanks to a bad Derailment.
Those are some of the strongest Bridges in the World. Very sad.
Very good pics. Thanks for sharing them with us. I just wish you were here to explain what’s happening in each picture.[:)][tup]

We had ‘similar’ accident happen in this area several years ago.
CSX (old L & N) had a derailment that took out a truss bridge over a river.
They rebuilt it with a girder bridge, and single tracked it,from double track.
Not exactly sure when the original was built, but we did lose some history
when they put the new one in.
they are untill something shears the cross suport members off…lol… reminds me of physics class… the best bridges arent the ones that just had the bottom fall out of them…the best ones complitly explode under the load… that shows that the load was distrubuted through the whole structor…and befor the “blew up” they held the most weight…man i loved that part of physics class…build a bridge and load test it to distruction… i did miss my calling in life…lol…

…I helped granddaughter “build” a bridge for a school project last year…It had to be a bit over a foot long and we could only use popcicle sticks and glue…We built a through truss bridge and then they subjected each bridge to weight in school…Believe it was almos 50 lbs. and our’s did stand the test.
On through truss bridges…They are at great risk when something happens and derails a train into it as it destroyes it’s integrity and of course it fails…Other kinds of structures that are all below the track level have a better chance of survival if a similar accident happens. These were good pic’s of the derailment and bridge failure…That bridge appeared to have been constructed of good heavy material…
…Good old TerraServer…Sure is a good way to look at railroad locations. I’ve hunted down a lot of rail locations I wanted to see on their program. My hometown too, plus our home out here in the midwest now…could even see the patio at the back of the house…
Are both Mains now back open?
