I’m going on a trip to the DC area, and was hoping to visit a train shop. I figure it’s a big city there might be a good one to visit. Anyone know of any good places?
Thanks!

If you have a car Baltimore is only about 40 miles away and theres a few there you could talk to Lionroar88 or fifedog
The Train Depot in Manassas is the best for toy trains. He has a good selection of Lionel.
Take I66 west to exit 47 on Rte 234 south. 1st light turn right on Balls Ford road. 1st intersection on Balls Ford turn right on New Market Ct. It’s at the end of an industrial park.

D.C. is a “planned” city with well defined borders. There’s not much in the way of toy train shops left downtown. The suburbs are another story.
Try Engine House Hobbies in Gaithersburg, Maryland, which is not far. It is smack-dab on the main line of the old B&O – now CSX and Amtrak – so you get toy trains and real trains. Even closer-in are a couple of shops in the Silver Spring/Wheaton/Kensington area which are is right on the edge of D.C. proper.

Also check out magnificant Union Station in downtown D.C. The best way to get there is by metro subway, IMO. There is (or was) a modest toy train shop on the premises but the draws are the architecture and the real trains.
Yeah if you want to drive about 2 hours out of your way . What part of Washington D.C. is Newark, DE.
the problem is you are on the northbound train and he is on the southbound. if he is driving down to DC from RI he will be driving right past it, less than 2 miles off 95. easy of and on. now comming from your area it would be out of the way
no the question was in dc area not 2 hours befor i know that area very well use to travel it every othewr week from VA to PA.
Also I didn’t pay attention to where he was from just the question so bust on my part I guess
Do as I do when I fly in to places [and that is a lot of places]. YELLOW PAGES. Then call them to see what they have.
Click,
The answer really depends on how you are travelling… are you driving, flying or taking the train?
If you are driving you could hit a lot of nice stores… If you are wanting to ‘meet up’ let me know as I live in Mount Airy and could drive and meet you some where… there are a lot of nice small stores about 1 - 1.5 hour drive from DC (not much in the city)… send me an email if interested.
Yes, we’re flying in. I am not sure I’ll be able to hit anything outside the city. The only place we’re renting a car to drive to is the Air and Space museum thing in VA. We have a full list of things to hit and will barely get half of it in in the few days we have, so if there’s nothing convenient in the city, I’ll probably not be able to do much as alternates go.
Oh well, no biggie. My Dad’s GF told me about an amazing place in NY, so that’s on my list. I just need to find out more specifics next time I see her. (My best friend is in NY so I have a good excuse to go there)
Air and Space museum is off VA state rte 28 next to Dulles airport 15 - 20 miles from D.C., Train Depot in Manassas is next to I66 and is approx. 10 miles away from Air and Space - down 28 to I66 and then west on I66.
Enjoy

Sweet! I’ll be sure to check it out.
