So apparently, Canadian PAcific is deciding to close the shoreham Intermodal terminal. Any reasoning behind this move?
I haven’t heard why for sure, but can only think of one person who decided to do it. The same person that just told 40 carmen and machinist to go home that worked in st. paul yard. Sad to see this stuff go cause its always hard to get stuff back on the railroad once its gone it seems.
The BNSF has a huge intermodal yard in Minneapolis and it seems to me they have almost all the intermodal business. Maybe CP realizes its a lost cause to compete with the BNSF. Does anyone think that the UP will build an intermodal facility or yard of their own to take advantage of the CP withdrawal?
Does this closure include international containers also?
I remember a rumor that the UP was going to build a intermodal yrd down in the rosemount area off of the roseport line. Don’t know whatever happened to those plans though.
To answer your question, I think the UP is far off from doing such. They’d also have to figure out what height restrictions on the New Line keep them from running double stacks and remove/reconstruct them.
The CN on the other hand, could easily buy out Shoreham and keep it for their own, and make gains from the business, like they are with their new Chippewa Falls, WI Facility.
The CP web site show both a Mpls & a St Paul site. Not sure where the St Paul facility is(maybe out south by the auto unloading?). I have also heard that the Humboldt yard operations were cut back, and the train that serves Progressive Rail will now be cut back to 2 trips/week.

I wonder if maybe Progressive Rail, TC&W, or Minn commercial would be interested in running it?
