have noticed a few posters who regularly use large type in their posts.
am just wondering why they would think this is necessary.
perhaps they could reply with a reason. I am sure they know who I mean.

Trevor:
I occasionally use Caps to emphasize a word, but that’s because this particular program on my computer won’t allow me to italicize.
Tom [:)]
I was thinking of those who use type at least twice the size of the normal font size.
was not thinking of you Tom
I HAVE A FRIEND WHO CAPITALIZES EVERYTHING AND IT GETS ANNOYING REAL FAST!!!
I THINK THEY ARE TRYING TO EMPHASIZE THEIR POINT BY TYPING LIKE THIS!!!
[:-^][soapbox]soapbox mode…[banghead]
Have you stopped to consider that maybe there are some folks here that have a hard time seeing small text? This hobby has many older modelers that may not have the younger eyes that you and I may have. The forum background of all white can sometimes strain the eye too so to counter-act that annoyance, larger, bolder text is used. Don’t know what else to tell you, if it’s your thing to not like all caps, then that’s something you should work out on your own.
Some people are just rude and “shout” with caps often. Others have accidentally hit the caps lock button and seemingly fail to realize or lack the desire to correct it.
AN ALL CAPS SENTENCE IS HARDER TO READ THAN VARIED TYPE.
I also will occassionally use caps sometimes to EMPHASIZE a word or phrase.
I try instead to use italics to emphasize a word or phrase*.*
This forum has the BOLD ITALIC and UNDERLINE options, so I see no reason why anyone should have to “SHOUT” to make a point.
If I can’t use italics and do not want to CAPITALIZE (aka “shouting”), I have learned to empahasize a word a phrase by surrounding it with asterisks, thusly calling more attention to it. Perhaps those without the other options can try the asterisk trick [:)]
For those who have a hard time reading the screen, this forum also has a font size option that can be larger to read and yet still not be in all caps. [:)]
let me make it clearer.
am talking about this
in between normal size .
am not talking about people who use a font a bit larger than what is the norm on this forum.
Not everyone uses all caps for the purposes of flaming. Galaxy makes a valid point that a lot of us miss. Not everyone can see all that well. I know at least 5 people who have to use all caps because the computer they have is a lot older - hence not having access centers etc to fiddle with their fonts etc. Myself. Sometimes i will use all caps if I want to emhasize a BUT… point as in i need to do this BUT you don’t…[swg]
Back in the day when all us YOUNGER hip folks had computers and all you OLDER folks didn’t, there was not a whole lot of options with text. So to stress a point we often used MANY different key strokes to make a point. As well as convey emotions —> :O) So some of us just have a habit of typing very fast and NOT use all the fancy coding that now available. LOL
But that’s just me stirring the pot. :[}:)]
Using all caps is concidered rude and is quite hard to read, but also take a moment to realize that we have a VERY diverse group of folks here. Most often when someone happens to use all caps or some such, most times I have found that they just didn’t know the deal or was an honest mistake.
BUT, IF THEY DID KNOW WHAT THEY WHERE DOING THEN THEY JUST BEING AN A1 CORNHOLE.
BECAUSE THEY CAN!!
Besides, whoever decided that typing in all caps=shouting needs to be shot. It’s one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard.
In at least a few cases I feel it is BB&E*.
brash, brass, & ego
Is that the reason all signs are capitalized??? CAN YOU NOT READ THIS?? Capital letters are harder to read than non-caps??? where would someone come up with that insanity, a letter is a letter, is your eye or brain incapable of deciphering the letter a or A . I would say if someone cannot read a letter, they are in trouble. Also this urban (computer) myth of caps as "shouting’’ is carrying on a very old myth started years ago, give it up. Is lower case lettering classed as whispering?? The print word is incapable of volume. Try asking this irritating question to a lettering or grammar specialist, strange how this terrible crime never existed until the marvels of computer minds invented it. Now remember, make sure you slow down when you approach a s t o p sign.
In the big scheme of things, does it really matter?
Maybe they’re losing their eyesight, maybe they’re trying to drive home a point or look more important to their ego…
I fail to understand why people don’t take the time to check their spelling or don’t bother to use capital letters to start a sentence, but I don’t try to pick a fight by calling them out publicly on the forum. Just be glad you have the time and leisure to sit around your computer and gripe about such a trivial thing… [:-^]
Don Z.
Why are we whispering?
I thought the flame business was a bit overdone. The all caps= flame is a kind of literal/at face value interpretation. And therein lies the problem. it is an interpretation. This interpretation cannot be deemed objective hence…[soapbox][:-^]
Here here!
What’s really annoying is when someone uses a font or color that’s next to impossable to read…[:-^]
I’m going to side in with jasper on this one… I’m one of those people who must sit within about 6-10 inches of my 22" computer monitor to use it easily.
A few years ago, some people got on their collective high horse and ******* about this so much that I left the r.m.r. newsgroup for a while. I didn’t need the hassle. It was only after a few of the other “regulars” wrote to me personally to ask about my absence that I reluctantly went back.
I’m not going to apologize but I will say that if you feel that my larger type posts are “in your face,” then you have the option to not read them I guess. If I need to apologize for my blindness, then there are a lot of people who DEFINITELY need to apologize for their stupidity in reacting to it.
I’d also take sides with those who feel that the typing in all caps = shouting rule is stupid. I’m not sure who made that rule nor who gave anyone the power to enforce it. A lot of people who type messages to me do so in all caps. They take the time thinking that they are helping me out. Whether or not they are isn’t the point; but the fact that they are trying to accommodate is.
In the overall scheme of things, I think we have a lot more that we could complain about instead of one’s method of typing. So let’s put a lid on this one and go back to discussing the forum’s topic, OK?

I just wish people would type slower…I am not a speed reader.
We don’t see magazine articles or newspaper stories in all caps, because it is harder to read. Headlines, a short group of words, are often in upper case for emphasis. When I was teaching typography to my students decades ago I showed them a widely-used instructional presentation that stressed the importance of understanding that some type shouts, some type speaks in a normal tone, and some type whispers. This is not new to the “computer age”. It is a long-acknowledged fact that typographers and graphic designers have used for ages to communicate effectively. Look at how type is used in ads, for example. Madison Avenue has employed these effects as far back as I can recall.
So yes, it is deemed that excessively large type is shouting, and many of us don’t like being people shouting at us. Someone with poor eyesight would likely adjust the type displayed on their monitor, or adjust the resolution, so that all the type is displayed larger, not simply what they are typing–after all, they know what they are typing. They don’t need to see it larger than what they are reading. Type color also has an effect on how it is perceived: red is “hot”, blue is “cool” for instance.
Opinions on this forum are as diverse as the members, but nevertheless there are standards of conduct that are universal. Who would meet someone for the first time, and yell at the person because they want to stress their point of view? Not effective. Likewise, here.
To keep this “on track” lets try not to blow off too much steam or we might find the thread derailed. [:)]
