Show your geared steam photos

In another thread there has been a great discussion about models of geared steam, but not a lot of pictures. I’m starting this one with an invitation for you all to post pictures of Shays, Heislers, Climaxes, and other geared steam locomotives - both models and prototypes. Feel free to drop in expounding information, too.

I’ll start it off with a shot of one of mine hauling the daily passenger train from Blackwater up to the town of Bute Creek. The locals (with tongue in cheek) call the train the “Blackwater Cannonball.”

Sounds like a plan! [:D]

To the left, an MDC Climax that I took the liberty of installing the shell over a Bachmann 44 ton chassis, I didn’t feel the need to upgrade the original MDC chassis, it is basically the same as the MDC Shay drive, with bullgear and trucks, I went with the 44 ton because of 1) price 38.00 and it was DCC ready, 2) running characteristics.

The 2 on the right are Bachmann Shays before weathering. The bottom picture is a Rivarossi Heisler, DCC. This locomotive has slowly become my favorite, its runs as well as the other three locos. “Boise Cascade” will be removed.

I’ve only a Shay: And a vid with this little gem.

And here at my “Pizza” layout, with 8.7’’ radius.

MDC Climax modified with motor and gear train assy. and Micro-Tsunami decoder.

Rich

My Bachmann 3-truck shay with rebuilt tender and NWSL gears. A real smooth runner.

Here we see it running in to the industrial area on my M-K & Eastern RR:

The Atlas N scale Shay is a nice anachronistic break from all those F units and SD40’s!

Hey Phil, thanks for creating a cool thread. Uhh, Mr. Smith, you’ve been holding out on us! Very nice examples as are the others posted. I don’t feel so guilty now having such a wierd collecting habit.

Here a few of my favorites:

M Man, A Vulcan! Scratched from a Heisler?

But,[:-^] thats…? not…? geared.?

I won’t tell if you don’t…[oX)]

It’s just too cool not to share.

GS, It’s a PFM 50 ton Vulcan Duplex. No scratch.

[(-D] Yeah, It is cool though, reminds me of a Garret.

No! What are you people doing? I was content designing my new 6x16’ ho scale layout depicting NYC in the 50s and 60s-now how am I going to decide? I actually thought to my self-don’t click on that thread, Jim, it is dangerous.

Oh well.

Does anyone have any good web resources for geared steam in the north east handy?

Thanks,

Jim

By the way, there are some exceptional photos here!

Edit:

I found some links, guess google is my friend too:

First, here’s one from the 1:20.3 Seashore, Horry And Georgetown (SHAG RR) in the backyard, taken during a staff meeting

Then, one from the first revenue run on the HO Winneshiek & Western, as Climax #3 meets the Clinchfield local to pick up empty coal hoppers.

What is the big gauge one? The NRRM has one like that with the canted verticle cylinder. I remembered them having a Shay but now I’m not sure. I know they have one of those but now I don’t remember if they have a traditional Shay. The second one REALLY puts size comparison into perspective.

Great pics guys, I will get some of my Climax this weekend running at the local club, for now all I have is the pic after I stripped off the super thick paint and repaired the damage. Cant bring myself to paint it just yet. Maybe soon I will paint the engine. Cheers Mike

Here’s a couple of my old brass ones at Tree Tops on my ECR.

Here’s the Class B close up. My stock standard Spectrum Climax (with broken gears) is in the background.
