In the U.S., signalling is very dependent on the particular railroad, and even with a railroad, on the heritage of a certain line.

The NORAC signalling rules are in use by a number of railroads, particularly on the east coast, but many of the big freight roads have their own rules, so it might be easier to give examples/explanations of you were looking for a particular railroad and time period.
