SIGNALS

Who is using signals with block detection? If so are you using Digitrax or ?
We are to that point with this thing.
ALSO need info on CNJ signal sysytem from the mid 1950’s. Pictures, specs ANYTHING to get a starting point.
Thank you.

We’re using the system from Integrated Signal Systems on our railroad. All the detectors are wired in, working, and connected to the dispatcher’s panel. We have all the block signal modules built, installed and wired, but no signals installed yet. We didn’t want to take any chances banging/breaking them while doing scenery, so we’re going to install them as we scenic our way around.

The actual signals we use are the Oregon Railway Supply (I think that is the name), three color (Two lights on top and one centered below them on a round head), target heads on masts for single track and cantilevers for two tracks. Nice stuff, but there are more choices out there now.

We’re using the CVP Railcommand system on the railroad and like it a lot. We were already too deep into this system to switch over to DCC, it would have cost us a bundle of money to switch.

As for the CNJ signals in the 50’s? I used to be into the anthracite roads, I know I’ve seen pictures and read about them in books, but can’t remember what they were using then. I have CNJ Timetable number 2, dated Sunday, October 28, 1973. All the signals shown in that section of the timetable are of the searchlight type. When I was still in high school, we used to railfan the LV between Allentown and Wikes Barre back in the early to mid-70’s (Showing my age) and that line was all searchlight (All ex-CNJ).

You could get in touch with the Anthracite Roads Historical Society, or look for an online forum for CNJ or the anthracite roads. I know someone will be able to help you.

Good luck.

Thank you for the great response. I will search for the signals AND maybe an operations table or information.
We are 100% DCC but I will look up those suppliers. Found a 1977 MRM that shows how to build signals and MRM book on 1950’s showed that they where painted black.
We have to worry about dwarfs also.
Again thank you.
What part of Jersey? I am from Jersey City MANY years ago. Watched STEAM at the Jersey City Terminal.[:D]

I’m from Blackwood, it’s about 10 miles due east of Philly.

The shortline railroad I work for actually took over part of the old CNJ. When we first took over from Conrail in 1986, we had 3 trainmen who were all ex-CNJ guys, but they’re all retired now.

I searched for SIGNALS and got a GREAT link to the PRR which had plans and everything for them. Wonder if the CNJ used PRR signals in the region around Nanticoke and Allentown? Sounds like a TRAINS question.

If you haven’t already, check out Bruce Chubb’s 4-part series on the C/MRI system, starting in the January 2004 Model Railroader. C/MRI is computer controlled (most people use old Windows boxes, but some of us use Macs), uses specialized hardware (circuit boards), and is extremely flexible – you can do all sorts of things with it. From simple block signals to CTC-type machines, to computer screens simulating CTC boards, etc. Even if it’s beyond what you want (now), it’s well worth reading – might give you some ideas, even! Works with nearly any type of signal, too (I use Oregon Rail type D signals myself).

Thank you will dig that out and read it.
Trying to STOP to cornfield meets in blind sections. Also the guys want me to put in a full signal and CTC based on the 1950’s which is what my railroad is ALMOST based on.
Thanks again for the information.
