Silly N Scale Switcher... what is it?

Does anyone know about this funky li’l engine?

I recently unearthed it and I can’t remember where it came from. I have a feeling it was from a cheapo set sometime early 1980’s…
“Made in Mexico” is printed on the bottom.
The thing overheats like crazy when I try to run it- probably needs a much lower power rating (ie battery)
I don’t even know what prototype it’s trying to look like?

any info appreciated!

Thanks,

Ryeland.

As far as the prototype, it’s probably a Plymouth Industrial switcher. Here’s Bachmann’s current model of it. I actually recently purchased one.

Not sure who made yours.

Rev 01. It appears to be an Aurora model, made in 1970. But it is definitely a Plymouth.

You might want to make a bookmark of the following site, which is Spookshow’s N Scale Locomotove Encyclopedia. It’s a very useful site for finding stuff like this.

You can find some information on the prototype here, with photos:

“Atlas” keeps screaming at me from way back in the stone age of N-Scale!!!

Thanks, Ed. Indeed it is an Aurora from the tabletop set (which was awful, btw)

thanks for the spookshow link. Very helpful.

Best,

Ryeland.
