What was the silverstreak? What railroad? It went from Chicago to Az.
Thanks
As far as I know, this name was only used for a train in two movies, made in the 1930s and the 1970s. In the second movie the train ran through Arizona to Chicago (although the actual filming was done on the CP in Canada, when CP still ran “The Canadian”) using “Canadian” cars and GMD F units in CP red.
The pre war movie used an early Burlington “Zephyr” train (possibly the “Pioneer Zephyr”).
Peter
Chicago, Burlington & Quincy had a “Silver Streak Zephyr”, which ran between Kansas City, Mo.,and Lincoln, Neb. (via Omaha) from 1940 to 1959.
The prewar movie used the original (Pioneer) Zephyr 9900.
Filming of the preWWII “Silver Streak” movie is covered in an article in the Pioneer Streamliners special issue of Classic Trains
Actually, in the 1976 movie, the train ran from Los Angeles to Chicago. This is the same route that the Santa Fe’s Super Chief travelled on.
m636c: Movie “silver streak” was filmed around Calgary, LONG after the “Canadian” was taken out of service; hence the availability of the coaches.
At the beginning of the movie, a taxi pulls up in front of LA Union Station. The trackside scene is in Canada, Montreal,I think. At the end of the movie, as the Silver Streak is speeding towards “Chicago”, a CN Turbotrain can be seen in the background.
Actually Silverstreak was filmed around two Canadian Cities Toronto and Calgary. The final scene of trhe train crashing into the station was a movie prop replica of Toronto Union Station.
A small part of the 1976 Silver Streak was made in Chicago. The scenes of the train entering the trainshed from the viewpoint of the train itself while speeding towards its final destination were actually filmed at the Chicago and North Western downtown station. I recall that one of the local television stations had a news feature about the filming of the scene.
Yes, they mounted the camera on a high-rail truck and backed it into the depot.
I was surprised the CNW didn’t bother to clean up the tracks before the filming. You can see litter all along the track under the trainshed.
I think that the name Silverstreak was only in two movies. Silverchampion is on a HO scale Railroad.
