Deshler, Ohio, is about 25 miles from where I live & I’ve been there from time to time to watch trains along the CSX mainline. There is an old tower there still in use by the maintenance department.
I took some pictures of each side of the tower, resized them, squared them up and then made a simple paper model of the building. The pieces for this simple model will be posted online at 8:00am Tuesday for those of you who might be interested. The model is part of my “Along the Right of Way” blog that I write for the newspaper I work for.
You can find my blog by going to www.thecourier.com, then clicking on the “Virtual Village” link either in the top navigation or the logo along the side. From there, simply click on “Along the Right of Way.”
The model will be featured for three days; after that, it will be part of the archives so if you don’t get there within the next three days, you can still find it later.
It’s a simple model but you might find it an interesting addition to your layout, especially if you are a B&O modeler. Thank you very much for your interest.
Very nice, Dan! [^][tup] I’m quite fond of interlocking towers and vintage depots and like to get pictures of them, when possible. I’ll definitely have to check out that tower the next time one of my wife and I’s excursions take us over to that part of the state.
You’re welcome! I’d ask that you share your results with me and the rest of us here. I’d also like to post pictures of people’s completed models on my blog as well.
You are welcome. The depot at Deshler has seen its better days but the tower is still in relatively good shape. The second story has some open windows which can’t be helpful but in general, a few repaired windows and a coat of paint would serve it well.
I’ve often thought that if I ever became independently wealthy, I’d like to have a building like that for a small apartment! Stick it somewhere near the railroad tracks and watch trains while sitting in the bay window… now THAT would be the life. [:)]
Thank You so very much to all of you who have taken the time to visit & download the files for the paper model. It looks like a lot of you have done so. The site was even listed on at least one foreign model railroading list as well as on one other model railroading forum.
I would like to have some feedback on the model as there may be other simple subjects suitable for similar treatment in the future. For those of you who took the time to d/l & assemble the model, please let me know what you think; I would appreciate hearing from you. You may either post here or email me at danmerkel@sbcglobal.net
For those of you who might have missed this post earlier, the link above will take you to the archived post dealing with the paper model.
A special “Thank You” to all who visited; as of late Wednesday, I had nearly 500 visits to the post. Now it’s on to other, hopefully, even better things…
