sink or swim

i hav some swimming figures that i would like to have "swimming"in my river. the resen will be 1/4 " , give or take. i know your out there would you me your ideas for suspending them in the “water” ?

i thank you for any and all help.

1/4 inch is rather deep. 1/8th or less is more normal.

You pour the resin first, then sand down the swimmers so that they are flat on the surface that will be in contact with the water.

Mount them on thin piano wire painted black. It will be both under them and under water.

A friend of mine wanted things suspended in the water while it set. He used piano wire and a bit of hot glue (from the glue gun) to attach it to all the bits of flotsam and stuck the other end in the foam on the shore. When the time came the glue peel off the objects quite easily.

There was an article about eight years ago in MRR or some other mag about doing this.

I would not even sand them down. I would just put them in the resin, you will probably see the bottom part that way. Of course you won’t be able to remove them, morning, noon,or night…

This was a technique that didn’t quite work, because I the beaver was too tall and I only wanted one more pour:

In this case, I corrected it by removing the lower half of the beaver, gluing him in place and then adding a final thin pour.

This is a swamp, so I added some acrylic paint to each layer of Envirotex. This makes the water murky, and adds depth. Since you’re modeling a river, this will help you, too, by making the bottom less distinct.

For swimmers, I would glue them directly on the base material before pouring anything. Glue the feet, and support the upper bodies while the glue sets, then remove the support while you pour the resin. Swimmers should be at about a 30-degree angle to the horizontal. For people standing, you may have to drill a hole around them. Use a level! Make sure the heads of all the swimmers come out to the same height. Waders can be higher.

I just glued mine in place before the 1st pour of Envirotex. That way you can see their legs beneath the surface. 2 pours & done!

Gee, I need to dust this more often! []

Karl,

I keep a brown paper bag over my water when layout is not in use, saves dusting and cleaning.

I really should finish the ceiling, that would help too.

Have fun,

Richard
