If any of you have ever used the below site, it is going away. No other info.
You can save the pages as a HTM document for reference on your PC. Click on File, then click Save Page as. This will allow you to have the info. You will end up with a HTM file and one named Files which has all the photos. I have been doing this for a few years in case a site goes away. Stuff happens.
This website has a lot of useful information that I’ve referred to over the years. It’s a shame to see it going away, lock, stock, and barrel! Looks like I’ve got a lot of html-page-saving to do when I get home tonight!
The site’s owner is a regular member of the forum (hminky). Hopefully he’ll fill us in on what’s going on.
I sent Harold the following email, hopefully he will respond:
"WE OVER HERE AT THE MR fORUM HAVE NOTICED THAT YOUR WEBSITE IS SHUTTING DOWN. We hope that you will share with us why and what the future plans are. Some have already volunteered to host your stuff on their site. It would be sad to see your website go with all that great info so many have benefitted from.
We hope you are in good health, Best Regards, Jay Moynihan aka modelmaker51."
I wandered over onto this link; I might just be having a bad day but can someone explain to me how you can model 3 foot gauge narrow gauge using On30? That’s got me scratching my head?
If you ask me, why not just host it on one of those free webhosting things. Sure it will have to be a stripped down version of what the OP’s link shows, but at least it’ll be around and the ones who like the site will still be able to go see the content. Maybe they just don’t want to maintain the current website.
On30 modelers are not rivet counters. Most On30 modelers are going for the “flavor” of narrow gauge and enjoy the ability to freelance oddball equipment in a scale that allows for more detail.
If you check his new web site, you’ll find his direction has changed to modeling the Midwest instead of California.
My guess is that the old site became unwieldly to maintain, and had the wrong url, so it became easier to blow it away and start anew with the new theme. I downloaded the “keeper” articles from the old site for private consumption last night. At least Harold was good enough to provide sufficient warning.
I am very thankful Harold continues to share his modeling with us. He is truly interested in trying new techniques and methods to achieve the desired results. And he shares the good, bad, and ugly.
After seeing the new site I figured the same. The old site was becoming difficult to navigate. I noticed today Harold is suggesting downloading the pages.
That did happen a few days before I saw Harold’s announcement. Another fellow who sold decals for the 1900 era, up and quit. When he announced it, it was right away. All unfilled orders to be returned.
Quite a surprise. Clover House has decals for about the same era but have been announcing that they are for sale.
When I find a site of interest, I download everything that looks like I can use.
