Hello, I want to build a skeletonized SD40-2 (static -nonpowered model) for a maint shop diorama. I can figure out the basic frame structure, but have not seen the inside mounting supports & any internal ductwork, etc. of an SD type unit. I was planning on having the engine removed on this model. I’d like to model it in a very scale way (nearly Proto87) as much as I can. That level of detail doesn’t scare me & is why I am asking, -because I want to do it right.
Do any of you have any good reference sources for the internals of SD units?
I’ve done a lot of searches but just have not found that magic source as of yet (off & on for 7 months)
Thanks
Hi Chad,
Try this website: http://www.altoonaworks.info/
Go to the photo gallery and check out the pages… it’s about Altoona so there is a few pics of steam but a great majority is current and there are some great shots of locos in different states of dis-assembly and being assembled. I hope that helps…
Ben
P.S. When you finish your project be sure to post some photos!!!

Ben,
Wow, that is great & much of what I’m looking for. Thank you for responding, I didn’t realize there was not much interest or direction in this area of modeling a loco. Thanks again for posting a reply, & I will get this project moving again.
No problem Chad, this is something I would like to attempt when I have more time on my hands also.
Since this topic has been pushed back to the top of the forum, I wonder if anyone else has done this yet with any diesels or even steam that would be willing to post a picture of their work…
