Slack Action

Does a moving train make the rumbling,“rolling thunder” sound taking in slack, like it does in the yard?

I don’t know if it’s as pronounced, as compared to going from a start or stop. I’ve heard crews say the old ore jennies are the worst though.

well… the sound of the locomotives under power make a rubbling sound… and any flat spots on the wheels will make a thumping sound on the rails as they roll by… but as far as loud crashing sounds… only when the engineer is changing the postion of the slack in the train for what ever reason or the terrain changes the slack

If I were standing near the tracks on a section of railroad where the engineeer is changing the position of the slack, would it sound like the rumble the cars make in a yard?

Rumbling is not a good term…incremental concussion as each car crashes to the end of its draft gear travel…be that travel in draft (pulling) or buff (stopping) directions. The draft gear only knows it has come to the end of its travel with a loud concussion.

Good Engineers will have very little uncontrolled slack action in their trains.
