The Americans for Tax Reform, based on Washington, DC, has named the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce (SLCC)as its “Enemy of the Taxpayer” for the month of July for support in placing a proposal for a sales tax increase for regional tranportation on the November ballot, according to a story in the 27 July Deseret News. If approved, the sales tax would fund expansion of SLC’s TRAX light rail and FrontRunner commuter rail lines.
TRAX has great local support, having already exceeded estimates for 2010 ridership and numerous proposals are being floated to expand the system so that more can benefit. The alternatives to rail involve commuting on already congested I15 and I80.
So if local taxpayers support an environmentally friendly improvement to rail services - how can a Washington-based group call SLCC “enemies?”
