Those numbers would refer to the floorplan. For example, a 10-6 sleeper would have 10 roomettes and 6 double sleepers.
Edit: a 12-1 would typically be a heavyweight car. That would be 12 sections and one drawing room. Each section could be arranged to sleeping accomodations. There are many different floorplans and arrangement for sleepers and Pullman cars. I thought that I would just provide an example of two to give you an idea.
Dave,
The numbers are the mix of bedrooms/roomettes/etc… For example, a 10-6 sleeper has 10 roomettes and 6 double bedrooms. A 14 section Heavyweight sleeper has 14 ‘open sections’(like the bunk beds you see on old Hollywood movies). There are lots of these number designations and they are not all in the same logical order.
10-1-2 (10 section - 1 drawing room - 2 compartment)
12-1 (12 section - 1 drawing room)
10-6 (10 roomettes - 6 double bedrooms)

The first number doesn’t necessarily mean a “section” (four seats turned to beds) and the second number a drawing room (best room with a private bathroom, I think). Reality is much more complicated, particularly when lightweight cars were introduced. For instance, a 6-6-4 might mean 6 sections, 6 roomettes, and 4 bedrooms. A 12-5 might mean 12 duplex single rooms and 5 bedrooms. an 8-5 might mean 8 sections and 5 bedrooms. All you can count on is that the dashes separate the number of different types of sleeping facililites. You will need to know the specifics of a particular model prototype to know what the numbers mean. For current prototypes, I suggest you visit Amtrak’s website which will explain what different accommodations are available on any particular train.

Oops!! Sorry about that. The only 12-1 floorplans I have seen show 12 sections and one drawing room. I didn’t realize there was anything different in that regard.
