Slow Running Locos

Sort of an intermediate modeelr here…some of my locos that ran very well seem to have slowed down somewhat…here’ what I have done…I have gleamed the track … cleaned the loco wheels…cleaned the wheel wipers…lightly lubed the gears…any advice.

I think I probsbly need to take the loco apart for a good cleaning but I am always a bit hesitant…for fear of not getting it back together…

Any advice…

Sam

Voltage? Have you checked the voltage all around your layout with a volt meter? You may also have a tired power supply, or a defective one.

I wonder if the motor is in good repair?

Sam,

You mentioned that “some” of your locos have slowed down a bit.

So, not all of them? A few of them? Most of them?

Trying to understand if it is you fleet of locos at fault, your track, or your power system.

Tell us more.

Much more information needed:

DC or DCC ?

Brand and type or model number of control system being used.

Brand and type or model number of locomotives that have “slowed down.”

The newer locomotives with sound systems and DCC capability run much better and considerably faster on G Scale voltage. Hope your power pack has a G scale setting!

Very bad advice! A G-scale power pack puts out 24 Volts at up to 20 Amps, depending on the quality of the pack. This is almost double the recommended voltage for HO scale, and is like advising someone to connect their room lighting to 220 Volts to make the bulbs burn brighter.

A sound equipped HO scale loco may run for a while on the G-scale setting, but not very long before the electronics burns up.

I assume this is a joke.

Follow this and you will fry your HO engines for sure.

Do the loco’s speed up when they get closer to the feeder track?

There are a lot of things that can cause the problem and several have been covered.

Are any of the loco’s running fine or are all of them slow?
