When I saw your topic in the menu I immediately wanted to respond that I was having no problems with the speed of the web site tonight. However, when I clicked on your post it took a very long time to load (not minutes but certainly much longer than usual). Go figure! You were right!
Like you said. it must be too many kissy-poos on the web![;)]
Seriously, this site seems to be slower than normal on too many occasions. I don’t think there are that many people logged on at any one time to explain the delays. Certainly when I am on other sites (i.e. Walthers) there seem to be very few delays.
Maybe someone with more knowledge of the internet can explain.
I think they are using the same server they had the last go around…if there are many people on the forum it will be a slooooww day here…right now…not so much…[*-)]
I’ve been noticing slow page loading from this site, too. Other places, even the notoriously slow CNN dot com, are loading fine. When I go to a page, the header picture comes up, along with its links, but then there is a long delay, and finally everything else pops up at once.
To help our friends at Kalmbach, when you’re experiencing problems, let them know what browser you’re using, and if you’ve got any special pop-up blockers or whatever turned on. I’m using the company-mandated IE6 (yes, 6, stone axes, flint arrowheads and all) and there is all sorts of nanny-filtering installed.
I believe Wade has the server set up so that it does its daily back-up around the time you fellas mention. It is always much slower in the mid-late evening for me on the left coast, and that would be about right.
If you’re using Firefox for your browser (like I am), I found that the site runs faster since I installed their AdBlock add on. It’s too bad that the thing that drives the forum (advertising) slows the site to a crawl, although heavy traffic would have an effect, as well. Do you perform normal maintenance on your computer? Clearing your browser cache regularly helps, too.
It makes perfect sense to not do the web backup at 2 AM if you are using that ‘window’ for running production backups and batch jobs. Remember, the forum does not really generate any revenue other than some advertising you see in the right panel.
I agree, that the ‘design/layout’ of the forum could be better. But I suspect that this is just ‘shrink-wrap’ software they have purchased.
Jim, don’t get me started on “shrink-wrap” software. When I worked in the IT dept. for the Phoenix Transit System, they wanted software for their fleet maintenance software. Instead of having the IT group look for one, they had the finance officer buy one. To put it bluntly, it sucked! Then the finance officer quit, and they expected the IT group to fix it. Needless to say, we spent months trying to get that hunk of junk to work properly.
