I have a couple of Proto 1000 Erie Builts, non-DCC. They run fine, I replaced all their axles with the non-thumpers and I love them BUT, they’re geared too fast. I want more low range like my P2Ks. I know the prototypes were fast runners which is maybe why Lifelike geared 'em that way. Can I change a gear to make them slow down?
Don’'t know if you’re running DCC or DC, but if DCC an easier way would be to set the CV that controls it’s top speed. Can’t recall what that is off the top of my head. If DC then I guess the only option would be to re-gear as you mentioned. Some one else would have to chime in on that.
I have one of the Proto 1000 DL-109 diesels, which uses the same trucks and gearing as the Erie Builts. There’s only one possible way to regear the trucks, although it may not be the best way to reduce the speed because the worm gear teeth and worm are matched to eachother. The trucks use a double-threaded worm, so if you replaced them with identical sized single-threaded worms, it would cut the speed exactly in half.
Can you run your Erie Builts at something other than full speed?
The Erie Builts start out slow if I crank the throttle knob very gradually, but all too soon they are running 60 70 80 scale MPH. On the other hand the P2K E8/9 is geared beautifully with a slow range that fills almost all of the powerpack dial. That’s the control I’m looking for.
Keep in mind Proto 1000 was designed as the cheaper line compared to the “top of the line” Proto 2000 line, so it’s natural the Proto 2000 engines have better motors, gears etc. and run better right out of the box.
I don’t know that there’s much you can do short of going to DCC which would make it easy to change. It could be NWSL maybe makes/made a re-gear kit for them?? Otherwise just keep the speed low by giving em less juice…[;)]
You could try changing the gears in the trucks with the one out of your E 8. But I as well cannot see the problem by just giving them less power.
Why does it bother you?
I have a pair of Erie’s my self and before I went DCC, I used a MRC 9500 power pack. It gave them a great range with the throttle.
Might be time to up grade to DCC. I running my Erie’s right now and I can make them creep along. I use a Digitrax Super Empire Builder and I can change power at 1% intervals.
If you want to stay DC, look at the MRC 9500. It was great and sorry I sold it.
