I have a small space with two short stub-end tracks that I was planning on putting either a small engine house or an outdoor engine servicing facility. This is in HO and the prospective footprint for an engine house is about 5 1/2" x 12". If anyone knows of a two stall kit about this size or a comparable prototype that they might have a photo of, that would be helpful. I’m also not afraid to kitbash something that might roughly fit into this area. Scratchbuilding would also be an option for me
Or, if this is not doable, I would be interested in some kind of outdoor facility with all the fueling, sanding, and other servicing details. Right now the tracks are on 2" centers with very little space (~2") from outside track to the edge of the table. there is about 3" from the inside track to the adjacent main line. The track spacing is not “etched in stone”. I can adjust the tracks to fit either a servicing platform or to accommodate the door spacing on an enginehouse.
The CN (former GTW) service area in Flint MI is nice and compact. Engine house, sanding tower, and fuel tanks are all right there. Click here for Bing Bird’s Eye.
Here’s another one, although it’s only a single stall. I lengthened it by using the normally unseen rear wall on the visible side, and added some scratchbuilt doors and a new roof. It may be from Kibri or Faller. I use it as a car and paint shop.
O’Dave, you have come up with two excellent suggestions. I very likely will use one of these. Looks like the photo of the one in Flint can be rotated and/or zoomed in on to get a good idea of dimensions and some details. the pikestuff structure would fit perfectly in this space as well; its a very tight piece of real estate, so it has to be almost the exact dimensions I stated or it won’t fit. Thanks a lot!
Faced with a fairly narrow space (30"), I also kitbashed my Volmer three stall roundhouse (built about 40 years ago as a roundhouse) into this loco shop:
If I recall properly Magnuson made a nice two-stall engine house about that size. Magnuson are resin kits and might still be found on e-bay and the like.
Didn;t know Model Power got the dies for that. It was originally made by Revell after a John Allan design (I think). It was offered as an enginehouse, bakery and two other structures. It is a classic.
Misterbeasley, that may also be an option, if I can find one. If nothing else, I could scratchbuild one to those dimensions; probably wouldn’t have to move any tracks if that’s the case!
I have this one also. It’s more suitable for my layout than the Walthers one I bought. The former seems more likely to appear on steam or transition layouts.
Depending on the local climate, several railroads on both sides of the Pacific maintained locos under something resembling a carport – raised roof (shed or peaked) with no side walls. A little lean-to locker held tools, lube cans and such when not in use.
One of those, in (IIRC) Pecos, TX., was over one leg of a wye at the interchange end of the one-loco short line.
Here’s my engine house which uses two tracks. There is also a RIP track in the foreground. (on the right side in the second picture)
Edit, just noticed this is a necro’d 6 year old topic.
I like the Pike Stuff 2 stall engine house and have the kit. How did you cut out the openings for the doors, windows etc. and I notice the groves for them are fairly wide. Did you cut against the outside edge of the grove or the inside edge? Did you simply use long sharp X-acto blade or some other method. Also, what kind of adhesive did you use?
Dragonrider may not be active on the forum anymore. If anyone else has built the Pikestuff 2 stall engine house, please read above and comment if you can.
