Small layout contest

Hello all. I am a new member to this forum. Anyway, I Just mailed in my entry for the small layout contest being held by Model Railroader Magazine. I’m curious to find out, how many other modelers besides me have entered?

I imagine they will tell how many people entered after the results of the contest are announced.
Since this is a competition, some people entering may not want to give away what they are doing. (hint: look up some of my old posts for pictures etc)
Some people have college term papers and thesis due around the first week in May, and may plan on sprucing up the layout and getting contest entries in just before the end of May deadline.

I will make a prediction. The contest will have between fifty and one hundred entries. Besides the official winners, probably three more entries will be published pretty much in their entireity as articles in Model Railroader and 10 to 15 more will have some part of the entry published, such as a “Trackside Photo”.

If I should happen to enter the contest, I suspect my entry might be one of the smallest layouts entered, but also, in some way, one of the largest.

That’s what I had in mind. And let me tell you that this was a lot of hard work. besides trying to put together an informative yet interesting article, getting the pictures to come out just right was a major challenge, Since my only real experience goes no farther than the old “point and shoot” type camera.

luckly, I had a buddy shoot the layout for me. I just hope they like what they see.

By the way, welcome to the forum. And congratulations on having the gumption to put together an entry.
And congratulations on having a layout that is good enough that YOU think is good enough to enter. You must be ahead of at least 97 percent of the rest of the guys who read these things.
Good luck.

I’ve been an active modeler for over 30 years. But, I never had the nerve to ever submit any of my work. I’m always thinking it’s never good enough. If I can figure out how to post some pics on this forum, I would be more than happy to share with everyone. Can any of you more experience folks give me a step by step on how to post pics.

Thanks in advance…

bob… open a photo album at photobucket.com… Then you can post the link to them in your forum…

Ok I manage to create a photo album in photo bucket. But i’m having trouble linking the site onto this forum. Please help.

Welcome aboard Bob!

Best of luck with your small layout entry!! I entered my original 12 x 13 MA&G in the 2001 Small Layout contest. In a few months I received a letter from MR informing me that while my entry was not one of the winners, it was a finalist and they purchased my manuscript for future publication. That “future” publication came out four years later (April 2005), but it did get my foot in the door with the magazine. Now I will have my current layout in Great Model Railroads 2007 later this year! (they came knocking at my door this time!)

Because of the constant cry for more small, room-sized layouts, this contest provides the magazine with many candidates for publication. It’s a win-win for everyone. I can tell you from experience that having your work appear in MR gives an enormous sense of pride and accomplishment. For me, it was the realization of a childhood dream.

Keep this in mind - even if your entry isn’t chosen for publication, one of the photos might make it to trackside photos - a cool honor in itself.

Good luck!!! [tup]

Ok, I think I got it. Hope this works.

P.S. This is one of the most recent structures I’ve built. It is scratchbuilt from one I saw on George Sellios layout.

Here is one more shot of the model. As far as the name J. C. Garage. it was named after a co-worker of mine who is into car restoration. Hope you like it.

excelent work Bob, great shots too… there seems to be some very nice legs fo a mechanic in the workshop, and is the guy in the blue suit keeping lookout for some underhand reason.

great scene overall.

Have fun & be safe
Karl.

Good work, & good luck to all !

I’ve always wanted to enter but they never seem to allow enough time. Building and documenting a complete small layout in the time given would have consumed almost every waking moment. I have therefore presumed that the constests are for retired people and people who do this sort of thing for a living.

I would enter but my layout isn’t near finished.
