Does anyone have a smoking steam locomotive? I would like to add a smoke unit to a steamer but I have some problems finding a good unit. I’ve noticed that most smoke units produce a very thin smoke that looks more like cigarette fumes than the clouds that come out of steamers. Any suggestions? Also, is there a way of making the smoke black? thank you
Most scale modelers don’t bother with smoke for a number of reasons. First, a really good fireman and a locomotive matched to its train should be able to operate with only minimla, if any, smoke. One seldom saw smoke along the N&W, for example. Second, if you did succeed in making a unit that really smoked it up, you’d have to either operate it outdoors or wear a gas mask! Third, the local fire department and the EPA would be all over you.
Ive read that some smoke units have sometimes gotten too hot and burned the locomotive. I would
nt want to chance this with a good loco. If you`ve seen the price of a pack of cigarettes the one you mentioned might be great.(If you smoke). Personally I even smoke when my daughters are around! Jerry
I’d recommend contacting Mike’s Train House and see about getting one of their units and seeing if you can fit it into your engines. If you can’t get it in, I’d try a Seuthe unit(it’s a bit smaller.
DEPENDING ON YOUR SCALE,MOST TRAIN STORES SHOULD HAVE SMOKE UNITS IN STOCK,SOME USE A ELECTRIC FAN,TO PRODUCE BETTER SMOKE,THE LIONEL TRAIN STOE I DEAL WITH REPLACE’S PELLETS UNITS WITH ONE THAT,HANDLE TODAY SMOKE>>>>>GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN>>SEEM THAT NO ONE OUT THERE WILL GIVE GOOD ADVISE ABOUT BLACK SMOKE,JUST JUNK TALK>> AKA HUB…
