Smokin (off topic)

No this is not another ALCO thread. After more than 20 years of smoking cigarettes I quit friday (why wait for the new years eve rush?). I have done a lot of things in my life but kicking this habit is the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I really wish I never started in the first place. You youngsters out there don’t start in the first place it’s a bad move. Anyway I apologize in advance if I cop an attitude [}:)]. Don’t take it personally.[;)]

Well done Chad. Now or never. I’m sure glad I quit.
You MUST stick with it !

That’s what I keep telling myself.[;)]

I quit too. Right before I hired out. Didn’t want to risk my job! Hey wait…I don’t think we are talking about the same thing.

[:0]Shhhhhh[;)] Don’t take me to front street mon.[8D]

I will put this back on topic! First - congrats Chad. Second - oh Ken! Third - I did see an engineer with a cigarette (in the cab), leaving town on a coal train. I thought this was not permitted, or is it you can if it is ok with your conductor? Maybe both smoke?

Moo…

Best decision I’ve heard in a good long time! Do whatever you have to do to get off the hook, pads, gum, accupuncture, whatever it takes!

This is coming from someone whos family has had several smoking related deaths (dad, gramps, aunts, uncles) and my brother and sister who both smoke and both have health problems, bad ones. I’m the youngest and never started the habit, mostly due to seeing what happened to my family members…

STAY AWAY from cigerettes! They are DEATH for sale with cleaver advertising !!!

Thanks Mookie. I have only been a guest in the cab, but nobody complained when I fired up.

Sorry Mook.
As for smokin’ in the cab, it is prohibited. It is usually not enforced and I usually don’t care. There have been times when I wanted to strangle an idiot or two though. One clown insisted on lighting up every time I pulled out a sandwich. Our dialogue got nasty and there was no more smoking that trip. If it came down to brass tacks, I was in the right by rule and he knew it.

Patches, I don’t need no stinking Patches !!![:D]

Just kidding…actually I don’t put much stock in that stuff. It’s mental with me, sheer will power and I will kick the habbit. I just hope it doesn’t drive me to drinking (more).[;)]

First of all, I’ve never smoked, and I’m glad. I do refrain from preaching, however. I’ll leave that to the “reformed” smokers.

I will offer that I’ve read that physical addiction notwithstanding, a lot of smoking is habit. One gradual method I’ve heard of involves breaking smoking habits one at a time. Start with the one right after you get up in the morning, move on to the one you have with breakfast, etc. Eventually you’ll have quit the last one of the day.

Take a look at the habits you’ve formed - do you “automatically” light up when you get in the car, or answer the phone, etc? Being conscious of those habits may help you conquer them.

And watch out for the “oral gratification” part of smoking. My late father never lost it, even though he quit smoking cold turkey when he had his first heart attack (at 35). Right up until he passed away (of another heart attack) eight years later, he continued to put things in his mouth, be it lemon drops, gum, or Life Savers. It puts the weight gain many who quit smoking suffer into some perspective.

Best of luck with your efforts.

(I appreciate any sympathy anyone may want to offer over the loss of my Dad - it was 35 years ago. Given today’s technology in the field, he’d still be alive.)

Rule or no rule that’s just rude. I would have i would have kicked his …

chad
good luck quitting.i can testify what effects it has on the body. my mother smoked for a long time and now needs oxygen to help her breathe.
stay safe
Joe

Larry, Very insightfull for someone that has never smoked. Unfortunatly the tapering off gig doesn’t work for me. Everytime I go that route it only lasts a few days /weeks and I end up eventually back to a pack a day. The worst times for me are when I’m driveing, especialy on long road trips where there is nothing to do. I just had to make up my mind to quit, Cold turkey, I just hope I don’t start turning to other vices like drinking. I typicaly have a couple 40s after work. If I can keep it at that level I’ll be OK. but I am commited to NOT picking up that next smoke.

And sorry to hear about your dad Larry. I k

THUMBS UP FOR YOU, CHAD. SHEER WILLPOWER IS THE HARDEST BUT VERY BEST WAY TO ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING LIKE THIS…STICK WITH IT BUDDY!

Hey Joe, that oxygen tank is one of my key motivateing factors.[;)]

I too offer congrats! I haven’t had a cigarette in almost 3 years now and I gotta say I’m much the better for it. I feel better, breathe better and I don’t smell like smoke. I have put on some weight, although I wasn’t exactly thin to begin with and all the beer from my college days didn’t help either, but it is still easier to lose weight than to try growing a new lung! It was always a mental thing for me, something I found comfort in, but I know if I can beat so can you! So good luck Chad! If you ever need someone for encouragement email me!

Mike

You could take up popcorn as a substitute.[swg]

I was actually amazed at how easily Big Girl gave it up when she came to live with me. She has a bit of a hard time once in a while, like when we play poker at the bar, and a lot of other people are doing it. If she can do it you can too.

Everytime you get the urge to light up Chad, think of trains.[;)]

Eolafan,Mike,Elliot, Thanks for the support.

Good luck Chad! Keep it up, you won’t be sorry! We’re all rooting for you, buddy!

I’ve quit for 9 years. What did it for me was the $$. Just kept thinking what I could buy with what I’d saved by not smoking. With all the taxes they are piling on cigarettes in California, I figure I’ve saved a bundle!!! [8D]
