The Constitution, it must be remembered, was written by candle light using a turkey feather. It does not give anyone the right to make other people’s breathing air filthy.
Smoking is a very filthy, stupid habit that morons indulge. Good for AMTRAK!
Good idea, Michael! I’m quite honestlt surprised that AutTrain still had smoking allowed on it.
An interesting aspect of this change is that, for the first time, passengers will be allowed to get off the train in Florence. Currently, the AutoTrain is sealed for its 18.5 hour scheduled trip, with nobody allowed to get off. True, the Florence stop is late at night, and yes, it is designed only for smokers, but I suspect that any passenger wanting to get off briefly at Florence will be allowed to do so. Might provide an interesting photo opportunity.
Ivar, you hit the nail on the head. Your habit is ‘unpleasant to others.’ That’s why it’s prohibited. There’s decades of research into the effects of smoking on those who don’t smoke; they should not be held hostage to your disregard of your own health.
SMOKING TOBACCO OR MARIJUANA IS STILL SMOKING. TRAIN EDITORS KNOW THIS…IS SMOKING A HABIT OR AN ADDICTION?? ITS BEEN SAID YOU CAN BREAK A HABIT IN TWO WEEKS… -HOW LONG TO BREAK AN ADDICTION??
Having been on Auto Train 10 days ago, let me assure you that the smoking compartment does NOT keep the stench out of the upper levels of the train. BTW, the biggest effect will be on the crew members who “live” in the lounge.

I don’t understand the last statement that says, “Electronic smoking devices, such as electronic cigarettes, also are not allowed”. They are not a tobacco product, contain no tobacco, give off no smoke and have no smell. Where’s the harm to others? That’s just a whole lot of going overboard. I suppose nicotine gum or the patch is also forbidden? The ecig is the same thing!!
I did not know there were any trains left you could smoke on until I read this.
A better solution would have been to make one coach, (possibly the last one before the car carriers) a designated SMOKING COACH. And not allow the political correct to enter.
I quit smoking over 3 decades ago. The stench from smoking gets into the upholstery on seats, curtains, carpets, and even the luggage racks. Too bad Jeff Guse isn’t complaining about Amtrak’s loss of profits from selling cigarettes in the lounge car.
For anyone traveling on the CP “Canadian” in the past you would recall the original art of some of our greatest artists
These have all been removed and upholstery changed several times account of the damage caused by smokers.
What a shame
Mr. Eisenstein, I don’t want to “hold hostage” anyone. Just a space set apart where I can indulge. I’d even pay a REASONABLE fee which could be used to install and maintain a good air filtration system that would “protect” others from the unpleasentness. And by the way, sharing a coach car with a sloppily drunk passenger is unpleasant too, and unhealthy for the drinker, yet beer continues to be sold on board. May not be unhealthy to others, but it’s still a double standard.
