Snap, Crackle, Pop! What is wrong with my BLI loco?

I have had my BLI AC6000 for a few months now and it has been just great. But recently the sound has been strange. whenever the loco makes a hissing or whirring sound you hear snaps, crackles and pops. Its especially bad when I turn on the cooling fans, it sounds like popcorn. The bottom-mounted speakers have picked up a stray spike or two before, but it sounded different. Just to be safe I tore it down and checked the speakers, which were clean.

I have tried everything I can think of, but I’m at a total loss. Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be?

Did you try turning the volume down? How about the volume of each individual sound? I know with my BLI Mike, the sound is way too loud as shipped from the factory and it seems to be overdriving the speakers.

wow after so much talk of how nice the bli’s are
this is not the firs one to go belly up
with the price up so high are we asking to much
is the quality suffering from the holliday rush
I was looking but now I will have to see what other BLI locos show up
last one had a gear valve pop off

You might need to replace the speaker. One problem with having the volume too high - even if it doesn’t “seem” too high to your own ears - is that it shortens the life of the speaker. [I learned this lesson the hard way with an expensive stereo system during my days of irresponsible youth.[:I]] Can’t remember any of the technical terms, but the place where the little spring attaches to the cone gets partially torn - doesn’t exactly do wonders for sound quality!

Sounds like interference, spikes as mentioned, or broken connection that breaks only intermittently.

Return to BLI. They’ll get it right, and right quick, if my experience last April is any indication. You’ll be without it as much as a month, and it will be put right.

It may be the sound board itself. Have you checked to see if there’s a loose connection between the sound board and speaker? Or a bad solder joint? Or maybe some Rice Krispies got in there, if it’s going “Snap, Crackle, Pop”.[:D]

Thanks for your help. Sounds like I need to return it to BLI, and not run it so loud. I guess 5 months of running it at full volume took its toll. Does BLI charge for repair service or is that covered in the warranty?

Unless they’ve changed their policy, they’ll only ask you to ship it and send a check for $7.00 to get it back.
