I have a question. What is the reson for the snoot nose on some SD40-2’s? Some raiklroads will chop them down when they re-paint them, so why were they there in the first place, design?

I’d have to dig into some old issues of Trains, where I know the question has been answered, and which means that someone will know… As I recall, it was partly due to Locotrol-type equipment. Equipment gone? Who needs the space? Might have had something to do with a long frame, too.
it was something to do with radio equipment back in the day…
The longer nose is/was to provide space for radio-control equipment.
Santa Fe’s pseudo alligators had the nose to contain the RCE Locotrol Equipment (masters and slaves) in a location away from the main generator and away from the heat. (Southern had their RCE gear is special freightcar bodies and Santa Fe used ballasted F7B hulks to carry the receiving gear before these locomotives appeared…Like computers and other electronic gear, the radio gear got less bulky. The huge front porch on an SD40-2 was under the nose of an SD45 on the same frame, so why not just stretch the nose on an SD40-2???)
The SD45 had a V20 engine so the hood was longer than the SD40 v16 hood. The SD40 had a front porch, the SD45 didn’t because the space for the porch was actually back under the extra 4 cylinders.

Aw, c’mon, everybody knows it’s for the throne room! New Question… How long can the train go while the engineer is off the deadman using the throne?
ot a single Hogger knew or cared
Cuase, we dont wanna be in there!
About 50 seconds-60 seconds, then the good hearted conductor (guess what I am) ,goes over while we are moving and hits the “ALERTER” button that resets it for another minute or so.Hopefully by then, said hogger is “through”…Hoggers will usually do this when on an uphill grade or on a clear signal, thus not putting said Conductor in a bind…If said Hogger needs more time ,we just keep hitting the “Alerter” and whistling at crossings until the “paperwork” is completed…And you thought a conductor did’nt do anything!!! OF course this is all a fantasy, in real life, FRA rules would NEVER permit this.
Fact of the matter is ,“Engineers NEVER go to the bathroom”…thats why they are so MEAN & RUDE…would’nt you be ?
