I’ve been looking for a snowplow that looks like this.
I can’t seem to find one anywhere. Has anybody seen one like this in HO scale for sale?
That is a Russell plow and was made at least at one time by Walthers. If they don’t have any check the large mail order dealers as I have seen some listed recently.
No it’s not a Russell plow - they have much longer bodies. This one looks like the kind that CN made in their own shops. I’ve kitbashed Wathers Russell plows into the shorter ones like this, although the shape of front plow is too long for the CN type.
The only way you can get one like this is to kitbash it shorter like I did or look for an expensive brass model. About an inch has to be cut out of the body and new wings scratchbuilt, among other things. I’ve had articles on my efforts in several magazines over the years. Walthers did offer a Russell plow in CN colors, as they did also have the full length models as well.
Check out my website on the link below this message - click on the “News” item re shots of my roster. A few pages down you will see my collection of plows, mostly kitbashed or scratchbuilt.

I was hoping for a snowplow. I’ve had to shovel the front of the store every hour today and we are supposed to get another heavy spell within the hour. [banghead]
I thought it was a Russell also but when I went looking for one thats when I realized it wasn’t. FundyNorthern, thanks for the info. So CN built them. I guess with CN and Ontario Northland being so close I guess thats how they got a few. I checked out your plows and they are very nice. Do you have any close up pics. I think I’m going to attempt my very first kit bashing project. That is unless you want to let me “borrow” one of your’s, lol.
As I noted, I’ve done construction articles in both Mainline Modeler and Model Railroading magazines on my plows - check MR’s magazine article index to find which issues and maybe you could order a copy of the article/magazine that interests you. Model Railroading would be the one that featured my Walthers Russell plow kitbashes.
And no, mine are not available to lend!
Good luck!

Thanks Bob. I’m going to get that article in Model Railroading and give it a try. There is lots of Russell plows on Ebay so finding one won’t be a problem. I hope it turns out as nice as yours. I’ll post a pic when I’m done.
There’s a russell plow short body(walthers) for $17.00 or a bra$$ C.P.R. plow for sale starting at $400.00 -take your pick. I think there is a REAL plow for sale in Kentville, Nova Scotia.
I think Ambroid/Northeastern has a kit for such. Also, IHC has a blade on a gondola. Could Kit-bash on to a caboose, boxcar, or whatever.
An early scratchbuilding attempt by self resulted in a “caboose” back side with scratchbuilt brass front end, and adjustable wings. “homebuilt” for my own RR.
I think RMC ran an article on one Dec. '99 or '00. Check the index.

The Northeastern kits are made of wood, and not steel like the one wanted. They have a long Russell plow and a shorter one. I have both, but have not assembled the shorter one.
Using the plow from the IHC gondola would make it a complicated matter. The Walthers Russell plow is probably the best way to go. As I mentioned, shorten the body and make some new wings.
