Snowstorm cancels MARC, Virginia Railway Express commuter service, Amtrak Northeast Service on modified schedule
Billy Hayes
Do you want to know that an assistant division superintendent who I had guided to the location of a sabotage-caused un-railment, said that the snowplows paid for their cost in diminishing costs of train-automotive vehicle get-togethers.
Not snow plowing.
The asst supt was related to the SPT’s Board Chairman.
MBTA commuter rail has not cancelled service at all this winter due to weather. Sure it’s a bit slower but at least it runs. A foot of snow is nothing for a 90 ton locomotive to push through.
It’s the DC mindset–someone thinks he sees a snowflake and everything shuts down.
Wimps! Put ‘snow-plow pilots’ on your equipment!
Note that conditions for the railroads is not the ONLY reason for MARC and VRE to shut-down or operate reduced schedules. If the Federal offices in DC are closed (because of DC road conditions), most of MARC’s and VRE’s passengers will be staying home. So clearing the tracks and running the trains becomes an expensive operation that benefits few passengers and generates little revenue for the commuter RRs.
VRE service to Fort Belvoir, VA?
